At 428 metres above sea level and 31 kilometres from Malaga and with 35 000 inhabitants, one of the most typical municipalities of the Costa del Sol is found: Mijas.

Situated in the mountain range that bears the same name, the countryside mixes the abruptness of the high mountain with pine forests and cities with chalet urbanisations descending to the coast. Here we find beaches with fine sand like those of Cala-honda, Butibamba and El Chaparral with cliff zones like Calaburras point, where the lighthouse with the same name is located.

Founded by Romans, which named it Tamisa, it was later Muslim, in an epoch which its.name was again changed to Mixa. Throughout centuries its most important activity was the exploitation of the quarries in its mountain range.

The population's primitive nucleus, located 8 kilometres from the coast like a lookout, is highlighted for the almost integral conservation of the typical Andalucian village structure of white houses, small squares and steep and picturesque streets which all together have been declared "Place of Cultural Interest". In Mijas-pueblo it is worth an interesting visit to the parochial church of the Inmaculada Concepcion, built on top of the old arab mosque from which the tower was used. Also found here are the church of the Remedios (XVIII century) and the chapel of the Virgen de la Pena, the local's patron, which was excavated in the rock. In the same way, the small single Plaza de Toros was built in an irregular form, with the wall remains of the old fort and the Museum of Popular Culture located in the old Town Hall.

Excursions in its narrow streets on "burro-taxis" (donkey taxis) are, finally, one of the most demanded tourist attractions.
